Almost four years after Zachary Levi Shazamed his way onto the big screen in the first film, the star is back for a sequel that arrives in UK cinemas imminently.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods sees the group of teenage heroes we were introduced to back in 2019 do battle with a major new threat – the Daughters of Atlas, who are played by West Side Story breakout star Rachel Zegler and screen legends Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu.

Ahead of the release, fans have already been treated to several glimpses of the characters in action in various trailers and director David F Sandberg has teased that the film is "sort of an extension of the first movie."

Speaking to EW, he explained: "He finally found a family in that movie. But now, we see him struggling a bit now that they're growing up. He's holding on very tightly to his family because he doesn't want everyone to just scatter and go do their own thing. He just found his family, and he wants to have them all together."

And if you're worried the sequel might not live up to the hype after the first film was a surprise hit, then you should look to our Shazam! Fury of the Gods review for reassurance. In a four-star verdict we said: "You’d have to be a vengeful supervillain on a particularly bad day not to give in to the film’s exuberant, optimistic energy."

Shazam: Fury of the Gods cast

The following cast members are set to star in Shazam! Fury of the Gods:

  • Zachary Levi and Asher Angel as Billy Batson / Shazam
  • Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Frederick "Freddy" Freeman
  • Rachel Zegler as Anthea, a daughter of Atlas
  • Ross Butler and Ian Chen as Eugene Choi
  • Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield
  • Meagan Good and Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley
  • Lucy Liu as Kalypso: a daughter of Atlas
  • Djimon Hounsou as Wizard
  • Helen Mirren as Hespera: a daughter of Atlas

Fans couldn't be more excited to see our new villains, Kalypso and Hespera, in action.

Their characters don't actually have direct counterparts in the comics, so director Sandberg has pretty much free rein with them.

He previously told Screen Rant: "I mean, it's a dream come true, first of all. I've been watching movies with Lucy and Helen, and now I get to work with them - which is just amazing. They're just the best. When we had these parts, we were like, 'Let's try and get the biggest and best actresses we can.' And we were able to, because they said yes. It's amazing."
